Plants for your home office

An alarm that goes off ten minutes before your first meeting, the cat that has already typed its own version of your email several times by strolling across your keyboard, and that one housemate who wanders into your Teams meeting wearing just a little too little.. No, working from home is not always easy, but we muddle through beautifully. And why not work somewhere with plenty of greenery and warmth around you? Besides looking lovely, air-purifying plants have been proven to have a positive effect on your concentration and productivity. Off to the shop, then. Pachira Aquatica (money tree)

To earn yourself a little extra pocket money for all that hard work, give the Pachira Aquatica a try. The Pachira is also known as the money tree, a nickname it picked up because in the Far East its leaves are believed to catch money.. Worth a shot, right? Besides its gorgeous foliage, the Pachira Aquatica is made up of several stems plaited together into one braided trunk. That gives the plant a sturdier base for catching all those banknotes. Put the Pachira Aquatica somewhere nice in bright indirect light. It is not keen on too much sunlight, which does nothing to encourage new leaves.

Coffea Arabica (coffee plant)

A good strong cup of coffee, please. The coffee plant simply cannot be missing from your home office. The name gives it away: with the Coffea Arabica you can grow your own coffee beans! You will need a little patience, mind, because with the right care the coffee plant only produces its beans after about four years. The coffee plant does not need much looking after, which makes it ideal for your home office. Keep the soil lightly moist at all times. In summer the plant can take a bit more water than in winter. The coffee plant also likes a warm, bright spot, but be careful with too much direct sunlight, which can shrivel the leaves.

Strelitzia Nicolai

A sunny home office? Take a look at the Strelitzia Nicolai. This houseplant gives your office an instant Spanish holiday feel, even on rainy days. Olé! The Strelitzia is welcome in full sun. In fact, the plant needs its hours of sunshine to stay looking good. Did you know the Strelitzia is known for the splits in its leaves? That is the plant protecting itself. Because they grow in the wind on the Spanish coast, the splits let the wind pass straight through the leaf. That stops a whole stem snapping off with every gust.

Dracaena Yellow Coast

If you genuinely take the crown for neglecting plants, the Dracaena is the one for you. Dracaenas are known as very easy houseplants. They need little maintenance and little attention. Give the Dracaena some water once every four weeks and it will be perfectly happy. Ideal when you are buried in meetings and spreadsheets. With its strikingly coloured leaves, the Dracaena Marginata brings that bit of extra colour to your home office. Just make sure it is out of the sun, which can make the colours fade.

Monstera Deliciosa

The Monstera Deliciosa is the one that really stands out in your home office. With its enormous leaves climbing up the moss pole, the plant gives your home an instant tropical feel. Monstera leaves are full of large holes, which is why it is also called the Swiss cheese plant. The Monstera likes a spot in bright indirect light or in shade. It is not fond of direct sunlight, which does its leaves no favours. Give the Monstera a splash of water every week and it will shine in your home office.
