The Yucca is a real sun worshipper and doesn't need much water. If you keep the Yucca Rostrata outdoors through the winter months, it can be a little sensitive to damp. Too much moisture can lead to rot, and you want to avoid that!

Yes, the Yucca Rostrata is known as one of the most winter-hardy yuccas and, in well-draining soil, tolerates temperatures down to around -20°C. It's not the cold itself but the combination of frost and a wet crown that's dangerous. During prolonged hard frost or continuous rain, loosely cover the crown with garden fleece or jute (never plastic) and remove it again as soon as the sun comes out, so mould can't develop.

How much water does the Yucca Rostrata need?

Very little. During the growing season (April to September), water only once the top 5 to 10 centimetres of soil feel completely dry, which in a hot summer works out to about once a week. In winter, water needs are minimal to none: once a month is often enough, and only if the soil is bone dry. Overwatering is the number one cause of death for this plant.

Yes, the Yucca Rostrata is toxic if ingested, for both people and pets. The plant contains saponins that can cause stomach and intestinal upset, and the stiff leaf tips are also sharp. Do you have pets or young children in the garden? Place the plant a safe distance from walkways and play areas.

Yes, that works very well, as long as the pot has enough drainage holes. A terracotta pot is preferable because the walls breathe and help the soil dry out faster. Add a layer of clay pebbles or vulcastrat to the bottom for extra drainage, and wrap the pot in bubble wrap during winter so the root ball doesn't freeze through completely.

That's usually a sign of overwatering or poorly draining soil, which can lead to root or crown rot. If so, stop watering immediately and improve the drainage.

The Yucca Rostrata is a very slow grower: the trunk usually gains only a few centimetres a year. Eventually the plant can reach 3 to 4 metres tall, but that can take decades. This slow growth also makes it well suited to long-term life in a pot.
